Bring a botanical garden into your house
It is not just paper,
My interest in flowers is in part inspired by my dad, who meticulously takes care of his plants and flowers from roots to buds, until blooming. Ever since I was little, I had been tasked with watering my dad’s plants on our balcony. I must admit that I was too young to value those emerald green leaves and pink flowers, but I could clearly sense how much love and care my dad put into them. I saw his happiness when his lilies bloomed, or when his orchid had a tiny flower emerging. I also witnessed how sad he was when the youth of those plants faded. It kept me pondering, is there any way we could have these ephemeral flowers stay with my dad and me in their eternal beauty forever?
Because of that thought, I came up with the idea of transforming crepe paper into flowers. In the process, I became inspired to create lifelike botanicals, in turn, blossoming my love for these creations.
While I did not get a chance to attend any art school like many professional artists, my work means something to me that many artists relate to, love, passion, fear, and excitement. I allow myself to label my work as an ambitious amateur, a floral enthusiast. I experiment paper with curiosity; I work with passion. Thanks to my father and his love for flora, I was able to breathe life into my own passions and find love in what I do.
From Hand to Heart
I never truly appreciated the natural beauty of flowers until I went through the meticulous process of recreating them. In order to reflect the sophistication of the flower’s structure and the accurate realism, I need to fully focus on each intricate detail from start to finish. From the coloring process to cutting, shaping, attaching, and forming a complete piece of art, everything needs to be done with care. Much of my work is done using fine Italian crepe paper, it features a smooth texture, and most importantly very durable which turn flowers from ephemera to eternity.
Based in Washington, DC (District of Columbia), PaperArtDC was born amid the pandemic. The Spring Collection I made during that turbulent period of time had put me at ease even though on the outside there was chaos, it seemed like the outside world's troubles came to a standstill.
Those lifelike paper flowers have lightened many spirits of my friends and clients who have seen them while locked away inside. PaperArtDC depicts botanicals through the lens of a nature explorer. An Autumn leaf with different shades or delicate cherry blossoms in Spring are carefully crafted with aesthetics and the imperfection of nature. PaperArtDC’s ambition is to create fine paper flowers with stories behind them that can connect and build a strong intimate connection between you and nature.
